Vere Harmsworth, 3rd Viscount Rothermere became the Chairman of Associated Newspapers in 1970. Harold Harmsworth's son, Esmond Cecil Harmsworth, 2nd Viscount Rothermere, took operational control of the organization in 1932 and complete control in 1940, when his father died. ![]() It was incorporated in 1922 and its shares were first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1932. The group traces its origins to the launch in 1896 of the mid-market national newspaper the Daily Mail by Harold Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Rothermere, and his elder brother, Alfred Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Northcliffe.
